Dear Yvonne et al: Some of you will have seen the following message,
which I posted on FICINO and ExLibris, but just in case, I pass it on to
you. Needless to say, I have tried a lot of other sources not listed
here: BL-O97, BN-O+, DVK-link, etc. Does anyone have any advice? One
respondent has spotted the book in Allibone, which is pre-Arber, but
wonders about Allibone's sources:
On behalf of a friend not on e-mail, I am trying to find out if a copy
of the following book still exists somewhere:
Stephan Batman, tr. [from Paracelsus?], Joyfull news out of Helvetia
with a treatise against Usury (1575).
This title is attributed to Batman in Andrew Maunsell's catalogue of
1595, and is listed in Arber's Index to the Stationers' Register, but is
not in STC and is thought not to survive. I have checked RLIN (both the
Bibliographic File and the Hand Press Books file), OCLC on FirstSearch,
and DBI link, without results. Does anyone have any advice about
further searches, or is it sensible to conclude that the book is no
longer extant? I would be grateful for information -- many thanks,
Germaine.
