     'Libraries within the Library'

A series of talks on the history of the British Library's collections
Sponsored by the Friends of the British Library

Dispersed along the shelves of the British Library today are many
volumes that once stood side by side in private libraries. This series
of public lectures aims to explore some of the smaller collections
which have been brought together to form the British Library and to
provide an introduction to the individuals whose personal interests
     and taste they reflect ...

     Wednesday 24 November, 18.15

James Carley: The Ones That Got Away: The Dissolution of Henry VIII's
     Library

The library assembled by Henry VIII, the most scholarly - as well as
the most colourful - of the Tudor monarchs, reflected his wide-ranging
     intellectual pursuits.

     Wednesday 8 December, 18.15

Frances Harris: John Evelyn, Library Consultant

Giles Mandelbrote: John Evelyn and his Books

The manuscripts and annotated books belonging to the virtuoso and
bibliophile John Evelyn (1620-1706), acquired by the British Library
in recent years, make it possible to study how Evelyn used his
     library.

     Wednesday 12 January, 18.15

Margaret Nickson and Alison Walker: Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753): Book
     Collector and Librarian

Sloane's vast encyclopaedic library, together with his natural history
collections, prints, coins and medals, was the principal reason for
the foundation of the British Museum.

     Wednesday 26 January, 18.15

Peter Barber: For the King or For the People? The creation, purpose
and fate of King George III's Topographical and Maritime Collections

What are George III's topographical collections and why did the
government try to seize them after they had been presented to the
     British Museum?

     Wednesday 9 February, 18.15

Geoff West: Buying at auction: building the collections in the second
     half of the nineteenth century

Chris Thomas: A Russian bibliophile: the collection of Sergei
     Sobolevsky

The late nineteenth century was a great period of expansion - by a
variety of means -for the British Museum's foreign collections.
