I am getting increasingly frustrated in my efforts to track
down a sixteenth-century book-owner whose name is in the
back of an incunable formerly in the library of Chichester
Cathedral. So far my attempts to identify him have failed:
there are a variety of possible candidates, but none seems
entirely to fit the evidence I have.
In despair, can I ask if any kind colleagues would be
prepared to check such provenance indexes as they have, and
see whether they have any books which belonged to a man
called Petypher. I have no Christian name for him, but he
was a schoolmaster, and probably also a priest; reading
Latin and probably also Greek, and with an interest in
humanistic texts; fl. 1555.
If anyone could carry their reserves of patience still
further, I would also be interested in any books with a
connection with the either of the following, whose
signatures can be found on the same incunable:
Samuel du Gard, Rector of Westnourne, Sussex, 18C;
Aug[ustus?] Taylor - probably also 18C.
Any offers of information will be gladly received and
gratefully acknowledged.
