Keith Manley is, I'm sure on the right lines. There are some
elucidations in Munford's "James Duff Brown" pp. 56-57 (not of classical
names however) but I can't see any in his biographies of MacAlister or
Jast; but Munford also wrote some articles about early professional
journals, e.g. LAR 84 (1982) 389-90 and 85 (1983), 101-4.
Or, Chris, why not contact WAM direct? He would probably answer you
off-the-cuff!
