Can any one help with an identification?
An I.Barnes had a pamphlet or chap book printed in London in 1619
"The Wonderful Discoverie of the Witch-craftes" which dealt with the
case of witchcraft associated with the family of Francis Manners, 6th
Earl of Rutland. I am looking to see the extent of Roman Catholicism
in the Manners family at the beginning of the 17th century to see if
the witchcraft accusation might have a religious background.
Is it a pure coincidence that there was a very active Bendictine
English priest busy in England at this time or is there a possible
identification to be made between the priest John Barnes (in the DNB)
and the I Barnes for whom the chapbook was printed in London by G
Eld. The reason I am putting this request on the Lib-hist list is the
possible connection between this I Barnes and Joseph Barnes who
printed many books in Oxford at the end of the 16th century and the
beginning of the 17th century and who identifies himself as "Printer
to the Universitie" in 1594.
Any suggestions for reading or any information would be gratefully
acknowledged
