thanks for your reply. I had rather thought it was a London based organisation.
Why I was particularly interested in the Society was that in the _Library
World_ vol.2, 1899-1900, page 279, there is a reference to a Miss I. Mitchell
giving a paper to the Society on 21st February 1900 on "The Political value
of public libraries". Isabella Mitchell was one of the earliest female chief
librarians in the UK. She was chief at Elgin Public Library from 1891 to 1925
and was clearly a long way from home. This is also an early example of a
woman giving a paper to a professional meeting, and not on the question of
women in public libraries either!
