The 1999 season of the Anglo-American Project in Pompeii will run from
July 3rd~August 7th. This will be the sixth season of a projected
fifteen devoted to the comprehensive study of the development of a
complete insula of the ancient city.
The Field School
We are now accepting applications for our Field School. We take pride
in providing high quality training with an excellent ratio of one
staff member to two students. We train all students in our whole
program with units in excavation, standing building analysis, finds
processing, and environmental archaeology. Throughout the program
students take a direct part in interpreting the archaeology and
maintaining fully detailed records through written records, drawing and
photography, all under close supervision and with full instruction.
Students are assessed through portfolios of their completed work and
judgements of their practical skills, based on criteria of competence,
understanding and attitude. The program also includes expert guided
visits to other sites on the Bay of Naples, such as Herculaneum,
Oplontis, and the National Museum of Archaeology in Naples.
Course credits are offered through the University of Bradford. The
Field School is open to students of all levels of experience,
background and research interests. We have trained so far more than 150
students from 15 countries.
The Project
The Project is directed by Rick Jones (University of Bradford), Jarrett
A. Lobell (Universities of Minnesota and Bradford), and Damian
Robinson (University of York), and organised from the Department of
Archaeological Sciences at the University of Bradford, an international
leader in the development of scientific approaches to archaeology. Our
1999 season will continue work in the House of the Vestals, which
became an imposing residence with extensive mosaics and elaborately
painted walls. Much has been lost during the two centuries since the
house was first exposed, but painstaking research has revealed the late
house and its development over three centuries, as well as recognizing
earlier earth-built structures dating to the third century B.C.
A prelirninary account of our Project and other papers on new research
at Pompeii can be found in the volume
Sequence and Space in Pompeii.
