Call for Participation

OZCHI'99  - Interfaces for the Global Community

November 28 - November 30, 1999

You are invited to participate in OZCHI'99, an international
conference presenting research and development in all aspects of human
computer interaction. The theme of Interfaces for the Global Community
reflects the widespread interest in the global internet and the need
for human computer interfaces that promote interaction amongst people
with diverse abilities and from different cultures. This conference
will be of interest to both academics and industry.

Human computer interaction is about theories and methods for the
design and implementation of interactive systems that are reliable,
easy to understand and use, and which enhance and support human work
and activity in a global community.


Scope of Conference

Original papers, demonstrations, workshops, and posters are invited in
all areas of human-computer interaction, including

Collaborative tools for system and interface design
Cognitive engineering
Cross Cultural Issues
E-Commerce 
Ergonomics
Ethics at the Interfaces 
Groupwork
Interface design models, 
Multimedia
Research methodologies in HCI
Special needs 
Useability Testing and Evaluation
Virtual reality systems
Virtual communities
Web design


Papers 

Full draft papers are required. These should not be more than six
formatted pages in length, and should include a 100-word abstract and
keyword list. . All submissions will be subject to a double blind
refereeing process (in accordance with DEETYA guidelines E1). Papers
are due by July 30, 1999. Notification of acceptance will be by e-mail
by September 17, 1999. Refer to the web site

Short Papers, Research and Works in Progress

These will be no more than two formatted pages in length. They are
expected to be topical, innovative and controversial. Students and
people in industry are especially encouraged to participate. Short
papers are due October 8, 1999. Refer to the web site

Notification of acceptance will be by e-mail by October 22, 1999.


Posters & Demonstrations 

Submissions should include a two-page description of the poster or
demonstration. Refer to the web site (http://www.csu.edu.au/OZCHI99)
for detailed instructions. Demonstrations can also be software,
hardware or video. 


Workshops 

Submissions are invited for workshops on any relevant topic. Workshops
provide a one day or half day forum for participants to exchange
experience, explore research issues and undertake collaborative work
on topics of special interest to the HCI community. Workshops should
have specific objectives, address stimulating topics and aim to report
their activity as a conference poster (or subsequent paper). Workshops
usually have about 20 participants and meet within the one day period
prior to the conference. Proposals should be no more than 1000 words
and should include objectives, theme/topic, workshop organisation and
duration, target audience, and expected outcomes. Workshops provide an
opportunity for a group of participants to exchange ideas on a
particular topic. OZCHI'99 provides facilities for groups to meet for
one day, prior to the formal conference, to discuss issues in both
research and applied topics. Deadline for submissions is July 30,

Tutorials 

Leading researchers and practitioners have the opportunity to present
a tutorial, prior to the main conference. Tutorials may cover any
aspect of HCI but those on state of the art methods and techniques are
particularly welcome. Half and full day tutorials will be considered,
as will tutorial "packages" composed of two half or a full day
presentation, as long as each part of the package is self-contained.
Proposals for tutorials will be chosen on the basis of quality of
presentation and value to the audience. Tutorial instructors are
eligible for reduced conference registration and a modest fee.
Deadline for submission is July 30, 1999. Notification will be by
e-mail by August 27, 1999. Refer to the web site
