Dear Int-bounders
PERMEABLE BOUNDARIES AND BORDERS IN A
GLOBALISING WORLD: NEW OPPORTUNITIES OR OLD
PROBLEMS?
25th - 27th August, 1999
Simon Fraser Harbour Centre, Vancouver, Canada
We are pleased to announce that registrations are now being accepted
for the above-mentioned conference, being co-organised by the
International Boundaries Research Unit at the University of Durham,
the University College of the Cariboo, Simon Fraser University and
the University of British Columbia.
CONFERENCE THEME
Globalisation has had a significant impact upon boundaries and
borders. According to many, the way in which borders are perceived
and the way in which they function has changed significantly in
recent years. Many would also argue that globalisation has resulted
in the breaking down of borders to accommodate economic co-operation
and new modes of political interaction.
While it is clear that changes are underway, important questions
arise about the broader impact of globalisation on borders and
boundaries. Has the propensity of scholars and decision makers to
declare borders more permeable had an impact upon the function and
organisation of borders and borderlands? Are there legal,
geographical or policital changes at the national and international
level which reflect this global trend? What are the implications?
These and similar questions will be explored at this international,
multi-disciplinary meeting which encompasses the fields of geography,
law, political science, international relations, history and
anthropology.
REGISTRATION FEE - 175stlg (approx. 400 Canadian
dollars).
