A couple of years ago there was a message posted to the list claiming
thousands of miles of China's internal boundaries were in dispute, and the
central govt was trying to demarcate them properly. Is there an English or
Chinese source for any delimitations to date? Any further word on these
conflicts?
Does anyone have any photos or info on the electric fence dividing
Shenzen Special Economic zone from the rest of China? Are the other SEZ's
also fenced and electrified: around Macau, Swatow, etc?
Are province boundaries in China marked by large signs as state ones are
in the US, Australia and Canada (provinces)?
According to the latest Lonely Planet guide to Taiwan, Kinmen(?) Island is
now open to tourists. This is the island off Amoy, only a couple of miles
from Mainland China that was subjected to heavy bombardment by leaflets,
loudspeakers and artillery in the heady days of the Cold War. All Taiwan's
other non-Taiwan-province islands also seem opened to tourists now. Has
anyone visited these yet? Can one photograph the mainland from them freely?
Can one photograph the island from the PRC?

>2). Domestic Border Conflicts Cause Thousands of Deaths Since 1949
>
>[CND, 04/30/97] According to an official report by the Outlook magazine,
>internal border conflicts over land, water, gold, and other natural
>resources had never ceased since 1949 when the current government took
>over China, AFP reported. Thousands were reported being killed due to the
>conflicts. To solved the local disputes, Beijing government laid out a
>plan to mark 9,909 kilometers (5500 miles) of official boarders in the
>next five years. However, so far the effort had minor impact on defusing
>tensions in the regions. It was reported that 1.5 percent of Chinese
>territory--about 140,000 square kilometers (56,000 square miles) of
>internal boarders--are involved in conflicts, AFP reported. (WU Fang,
