Canada has been watching the referendum down under rather closely to try
and see what is in store for us. Opinion seems split between those who
think it is ridiculous for this country to retain an absentee head of
state, those who sing God save the Queen before they eat their corn flakes
every morning and those who have had it to the knobs with constitutional
wrangling around the Quebec question and can't bear the thought of yet
another battle. Interestingly one of our national newspapers, The Globe and
Mail (not owned by peer-in-waiting Conrad Black), advocates that Canada
replace the Queen with a head of state elected by the 162 -ish companions
of the Order of Canada. Doesn't seem like much of an improvement to me...
BTW, congrats on the win over France today.
