READERHIP IN SPANISH and CHAIR OF FRENCH

Oxford Brookes University wishes to appoint a  Reader in Spanish
Studies and a Chair of French Studies within the School of Languages.
In addition to Spanish and French, the other departments of the School
are German, Italian, and the International Centre for English Language
Studies; there is also teaching in Japanese. All departments engage in
research as well as teaching. There are currently two Professors, both
in French, Sean Hand (also Head of School) and Mark Bannister
(Research Professor); and a Reader specialising also in French
Studies, Nick Hewlett.

Oxford is one of the best possible locations in Britain for 
researching in French or Spanish Studies. There are superb libraries,
a full programme of conferences, seminars, guest speakers and other
events, and two complementary universities that entertain a range of
formal and informal links. London's facilities are an hour away.
Oxford Brookes University is committed to enhancing the research
profile it has already established in many areas, and these
appointments form part of this strategy.

Colleagues in French and Spanish carry out teaching and research in a
range of areas, including literature, literary theory, philosophy,
cultural studies, language, politics and social change. They work
closely with other colleagues in the School of Languages both within
the framework of the Centre for European Research and the
Women's/Gender Research Forum, and in the joint delivery of
undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Taught postgraduates and
research students are growing in number. From September 1999 the
Spanish Department will also be offering a new joint honours degree in
Spanish studies. This is part of a strategic development that includes
plans to involve Spanish more in taught postgraduate courses and
research supervision.

The appointment of an additional Professor in French and a Reader in
Spanish will enhance a healthy research profile further strengthened
recently by the recruitment of several new members of staff. In the
1996 Research Assessment Exercise the School of Languages submitted to
European Studies and achieved a 3b; as a result of subsequent
developments, the School anticipates significant improvement on this
result in 2001, based on a return to three different units of
assessment.

The appointment of a Reader in Spanish is a key element in the
School's vision for the Spanish Department's future. It is designed to
consolidate the Department's established excellence in teaching, and
to strengthen considerably its growing research profile. The
Department has recently recruited one new, research-active member of
staff; and further expansion of the Department is planned.
Applications are welcomed from specialists in any area of Spanish
Studies, and particularly in modern and contemporary literature,
cultural studies, and critical theory. Candidates should be highly
regarded at least nationally for their research, with a strong list of
publications and evidence of a continuing ability and commitment to
publish. S/he will contribute where appropriate to undergraduate
teaching, as well as to MA teaching and the supervision of research
students. Funds have been set aside to provide a bursary for a
full-time research student to be supervised if possible by the new
Reader. The successful candidate will also play a significant role in
the School's development of postgraduate and research activities,
including chairing school committees on taught postgraduate course
development and representing the school on some university-wide
committees concerned with research and postgraduate work. The new
Reader will work to consolidate international research links.

For the Chair of French, applications are welcomed from specialists in
any area of French Studies, such as: literature (including francophone
literature), language and linguistics, cultural studies, history,
politics, social change, critical theory and philosophy. Candidates
should be highly regarded nationally and internationally for their
research, with a strong publication record and evidence of ongoing
publishing projects. The successful candidate will contribute where
appropriate to undergraduate teaching, as well as to MA teaching and
the supervision of research students. Funds have been set aside to
provide a bursary for a full-time research student to be supervised by
the new Professor. The new Professor will also play a leading
organisational role in the academic development of the school,
becoming a member of its senior management team and playing an active
part in strategic planning especially in relation to research,
postgraduate and consultancy activities. S/he will also chair School
committees concerned with programme development, including at
postgraduate level, and represent the School on similar University
committees. The new Professor will work to consolidate international
research links, and will be expected to bid for external funds.
