This is going to various email lists. The Geography Dept currently
has a bursary available for PhD work in the general area of the
geography of health / health care which is one of this department's
research strengths. A possible line of inquiry might be to link a PhD
to the Portsmouth Voluntary hospitals project which has built up a
substantial database on British hospital provision and utilisation
c.1870-1944, in collaboration with others (e.g. QMW). Those
principally involved in the project are John Mohan (portsmouth)
Martin Gorsky (now Wolverhampton; formerly project research fellow)
and Tim Willis (current project researcher). Possibilities might
include some GIS work on hospital catchments and patient flows; some
work has been done on this mainly with respect to London, but not
much elsewhere and this is an important issue for research in terms
of investigating questions about the impacts of hospital provision on
health standards. Other angles include investigating topics not yet
explored using the database such as relationships between hospital
provision and other forms of institutional care, or the
geographies of hospital finance.
If you have or know of potential candidates (minimum 2.1 in a
relevant discipline) please draw their attention to this. Funds do
not cover overseas fees, but we can consider candidates who could
fund the difference between UK and overseas fees (currently the gap
is £5200 p.a.). The bursary is available now and we need to fill it
as soon as possible.
Many thanks
John Mohan
