I can understand thr move to open up the mailbase to outsiders
however, a word of caution. It would be naive to post your audit
plans for all to view- what better start could you give a potential
external provider than to provide what in any other organisation
would be 'commercially' sensitive information.
Also I think that you have to recognise that although we are all tied
by a common bond in that we receive funding from the HEFCE, the
graeter proportion of many institution's income comes from
commercial, competitive activity. In certain areas we actually
compete with each other and therefore by necessity have to be
selective as to what information we release to the mailase.
Perhaps CHEIA need to define exctly what the purpose of the
discussion list is and whether members have to sign up to a code
of practice before obtaining entry. By code of practice I mean not
only refraining from anything potentially offensive, but also setting
minimum standards of participation.
Finally, would it be appropriate to electronically ordain Mr Hedley-
Smith as 'vicar' of the discussion list and thank him for his thought
for the day ?
I for one have no objection to the discussion list being used for
what the high and serious-minded might consider trivia, lets face it
there ain't a lot of laughs in audit.
