Dear colleagues,
May I draw your attention to three topics:
- New courses at ITC on the application of geoinformation to Earth Sciences
- Vacancy announcement for an Associate professor
- 2nd International symposium on the Operationalisation of Remote Sensing
1. NEW ITC courses.
Information on the new courses can be obtained from the following websites:
<http://www.itc.nl/ags/education/main.htm>
<http://www.itc.nl/education>
These courses deal with the application of Geoinformation to Earth Resources
and Environmental Geosciences. The following specialisations are offered,
either leading to a Professional Master degree (12 months) or Master of
Science degree (18 months):
* Applied Geophysics
* Coastal Zone Studies
* Environmental System Analysis and Management
* Geological Engineering
* Geological Resource Management and Environmental Geology
* Land Degradation, Conservation and Rehabilitation
* Mineral Resource Exploration and Evaluation
* Natural Hazard Studies
The courses are given in the form of three week modules, which can also be
attended individually.
For participants from developing countries it is possible to apply for a
fellowship from the Netherlands government.
The division of Applied Geomorphological Surveys has a limited number of
fellowships available.
For more information on the procedures for applying at ITC, given your own
situations, please contact our education affairs department, at the
following e-mail:

2. Vacancy announcement.
The Division of Applied Geomorphology is one of the 15 scientific Divisions
within ITC. The Division comprises 15 scientific staff members and is
managed by a Professor. The Division concentrates on the use of Remote
Sensing and G.I.S. for Natural Hazard Surveys and Coastal Zone Studies.
The ITC Division invites qualified persons to apply for the position of
Associate Professor in 'Geoinformation for Coastal Zone Studies'
(Universitair Hoofddocent v/m)
The main tasks are:
*Teaching at postgraduate levels and supervision of MSc and PhD research
*Conducting fundamental research and consulting projects
*Stimulating and acquiring new contacts for research co-operation and
consulting
*Coordinating ITC' s Coastal Zones studies program.

3. International Symposium
We invite you to participate in the 2nd International Symposium
Operationalization of Remote Sensing
with particular emphasis on natural hazards and sustainable development of
coastal zones.
16 - 20 August 1999
to be held at the International Institute for Aerospace Survey and Earth
Sciences, ITC, Enschede, The Netherlands.
The First International Symposium on Operationalization of Remote Sensing
organized by the ITC in 1993, attracted over 1000 participants from 80
countries, some 75 exhibitors, and produced a nine-volume set of
Proceedings.
With the new millennium only a few months away at the time of the Second
Symposium, this event will both evaluate what has been achieved in the
second half of the Twentieth Century in remote sensing, and will emphasize
particularly the needs and opportunities for the next century.

With kind regards,
Cees van Westen
