> InterRidge/BRIDGE Troodos Opiolite Field Course
> on Mid-Ocean Ridge Processes in Cyprus
>
> Larnaca, Cyprus July 11-17, 1999
>
> Registration Deadline: March 15, 1999

>
> Troodos Ophiolite
>The field course will provide an opportunity for graduate students,
>post-docs, and investigators working on ridge-related problems to gain
>first-hand knowledge of the geology of the Troodos Ophiolite (Cyprus) and
>its implications for mid-ocean ridge processes. The Troodos Ophiolite is the
>only accessible major ophiolite to have survived not only almost undeformed,
>but also unmetamorphosed. The field course will concentrate on the upper
>part of the crustal section, including the volcanics, sheeted dykes, and all
>elements of the hydrothermal systems. The plutonic crust, upper mantle and a
>major transform fault terrane will also be studied.
>
> Participant Selection
>This trip is limited to 45 participants. If more than 45 people apply,
>participants will be selected by the convenors in consultation with the
>InterRidge and Bridge Offices. Priority will be given to senior scientists
>and non-USA graduate students and post-docs (the RIDGE Field School held
>just prior to the InterRidge field trip is open to USA participants only).
>
> Venue
>Participants will be housed in Larnaca in shared accommodations. Two
>packages of travel, accommodation and registration (but not meals) will be
>offered.
>
>London to Cyprus return will cost about 440 UK pounds (725 US dollars)
>Boston to Cyprus return will cost about 850 UK pounds (1400 US dollars)
>
> Field trip itinerary
>
>Note: Lectures about Cypriot geology will be given during a few evenings.
>
>Sun., July 11 Arrival in Cyprus; evening lecture on the geology of Troodos
>
>Mon., July 12 Cross section through the ophiolite from volcanics, through
>sheeted dikes, to crustal plutonics, and to the upper mantle, intended to
>set the scene for the meeting and to introduce some of the most important
>themes.
>
>Tues., July 13 Volcanology, lava stratigraphy, dike-lava transition,
>sheeted dikes, introducing the problems of constructing a volcanic pile by
>extrusion of lavas from feeder dikes.
>
>Wed., July 14 Margi/Kambia area - volcanic stratigraphy/structure in the
>upper part of the lava pile, sulphide deposits, off-axis alteration,
>faulting of the upper crust.
>
>Thurs., July 15 Anatomy of hydrothermal systems (ore deposits and their
>root zones), including a visit to the Skouriotissa pit, now again producing
>copper, and to the hydrothermal reaction zones deep in the sheeted dikes
>where hydrothermal solutions were generated.
>
>Fri., July 16 Plutonic and mantle sequences, including localities in the
>upper plutonics, with fractionated rocks, showing complex intrusive
>relationships, layered gabbros,harzburgite/dunite relationships and a
>chromitite deposit.
>
>Sat., July 17 Limassol Forest - Arakapas Transform and associated
>lithologies in the Limassol Forest, showing the basement and fill of the
>transform trough, and the controversial highly-extended terrain to its south.
>
>** This InterRidge/BRIDGE field course should not be confused with the RIDGE
>field school (July 1-11), which is only open to US participants.***
