Apologies for multiple postings.

I would be grateful if you could draw the attention of potentially
interested candidates to the following advertisement about a PhD
in rock weathering. For those who have seen this advert before,
please note that the deadline for applications has been extended.

Many thanks in advance,

Simon Cuthbert

POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY:

BIOLOGICALLY MEDIATED WEATHERING OF NATURAL
STONE MASONRY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR
CONSERVATION AND CONSTRUCTION.

Geology Section
Department of Civil Structural & Environmental Engineering
University of Paisley

A three year postgraduate research studentship funded by the
University of Paisley is available to investigate micro-organisms
which colonize stone surfaces and to evaluate the resultant
surface deterioration and its causes. There will be a strong
emphasis on mineralogical and microstructural changes to the
stone. The work will concentrate on sandstones colonised by
algae, and will form the basis for advising practitioners on
measures required to prevent damaging colonisation and hence to
enhance the life span of natural stone masonry. The work will form
part of an active programme of research into stone masonry by the
Advanced Concrete and Masonry Centre at the University of
Paisley, an interdisciplinary group of civil engineers, architects and
geologists, and will involve collaboration with the Departments of
Biological Sciences and Chemical & Chemical Engineering.

Applicants should have a good honours degree in the Earth or
Environmental Sciences or an equivalent qualification, and should
be able to show a good aptitude in petrographic/mineralogical
analysis of rocky or soil materials. Some experience in the
application of microbiological techniques and/or environmental
geochemistry would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will gain experience and training in the
methods of environmental geochemistry/mineralogy and
microbiology in the context of an environmentally and industrially
relevant project. There is potential for presentation of the work on
an international stage.

The deadline for applications is Friday 30th July 1999.

For further information please contact Dr. Simon Cuthbert,
Department of Civil Structural & Environmental Engineering,
