Stone Weathering & Atmospheric Pollution Network, Annual Conference -
SWAPNET ,99
In collaboration with the School of Applied Sciences (SAS) and the Built
Environment Research Unit (BERU), University of Wolverhampton
Theme: 'Stone Weathering in Polluted Urban Environments'
Dates: 13/14 May 1999
Location: Wolverhampton Science Park, University of Wolverhampton,
Stafford Road, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, U.K.
Main objective:
Historical stone buildings and monuments form the cultural centres of many
of our urban areas. These areas have also become 'centres' of pollution.
Before the clean air acts of the 1950's and 60's, much of the pollution was
due to solid fuel combustion, but more recently pollutants derived from
road transport have become the new problem. Knowledge of stone weathering
processes under historical as well as more contemporary atmospheric
pollution is important for stone conservators, architects and scientists in
protecting our urban heritage.
The objective of the conference is to strengthen the interactive knowledge
of the problems, consequences and possible solutions of stone weathering in
urban environments.
