The 4th Ordinary Meeting of the 1999/2000 session will be held on
Monday 10 January 2000 at 7 p.m. in the HAWORTH BUILDING,
the University of Birmingham B15 2TT.
. Subject: Rugby Cement Works. A Case Study
. Speakers: Steve Foster, Keller Ground Engineering
John Kerry, AMEC Construction
Jason Ward, AMEC Construction
The talk describes one of the largest construction projects undertaken
in the Midlands in recent years. The development of the new cement
production facility involved the construction of a wide range of structures
within the operating works. The site was largely underlain by a deep
backfilled quarry, which created a number of interesting geotechnical
problems for the designers.
The presentation will look at the background to the scheme, the desk study
and the planning of the ground investigation. A trial piling and testing exercise
was undertaken, which included instrumentation of the test piles, to gain
a detailed understanding of the pile behaviour. Analysis of the test results
allowed savings to be made in the final design and significantly reduced risk
during the piling work. The particular geotechnical problems of the more complex structures will also
be described.
Members and visitors should aim to arrive between 6 p.m. and 6.15 p.m. and
park their cars in a perimeter car park. Normal refreshments (bread, pate,
cheese and coffee) will be available in the main bar of Staff House before
the meeting. At about 6.45 p.m. members should walk across to the Haworth
Chemistry Building.
