We have just heard from the International Arts Bureau that the European
Commission has just announced a call for proposals under the new
initiative CONNECT: Innovation and connection of Community Programmes.
The deadline for applications is incredibly tight - 30 June 1999.
The aim of the programme is to foster interconnections between community
programmes in the areas of education, training, innovation, research and
new technologies. The four action areas are:
* Promoting European citizenship via civic and democratic
education
* Better exploitation and wider dissemination of the results of
Commnity programmes with high European added value
* Promoting European projects to bridge the gap between education
and society
* Organising school competitions in science, maths and invention
Under the first action area there is a specific strand mentioning
cultural heritage - educational projects using new technologies, for
example providing tuition in subjects to assist young people to
understand the basis of European cultural heritage. Thinking laterally,
there are areas where museums could benefit from this programme - but
you will need to act quickly to get anything submitted by the deadline.

Secondly - a reminder that the deadline for the next round of the MGC's
international travel grants is 1 June. As usual, priority will be given
to projects which establish longer-term partnerships with overseas
museums and related organisations. This means that study tours are a
priority and applications for attendances at conferences have a greater
chance of success if combined with planned visits.
