THE SUSSEX ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY
Education Officer, Eastern Properties.
An Education Officer is required to teach university and college
students, pre-school groups, families and groups of people (adults &
children) with special needs, using the Society's properties and
Collections. In providing this service, the Education Officer will work
with an Assistant Education Officer and members of the East Sussex
Archaeology and Museum Project (ESAMP) on a "Training for Work" scheme.
Post-holder will be based at Barbican House, Lewes but will work
between| the three sites at Lewes Castle / Barbican House Museum, Anne of
Cleves
House and Michelham Priory.
Post-holder will report directly to the Property Manager, Lewes Castle &
Museums and will liaise closely with the General Manager, Michelham Priory.
Essentials:
Relevant practical experience of teaching and working with
schoolchildren.
A qualification in one of the following:- history / museums /
archaeology.
Car owner with a clean driving licence
Computer literacy - word processing, spread sheets, use of email.
Good organisational and interpersonal skills.
Desirable:
First aid at work qualification.
Desk top publishing skills.
Budgeting skills
Terms & Conditions:
Salary £12500, Grade E
One year contract initially, subject to renewal.
Full-time post, based on 37 hours, Monday to Friday.
Holidays 22 days per year plus bank / public holidays .
There may be a very occasional requirement to work during an evening,
over a weekend or on a bank holiday for which time off in lieu will be
given.
Business travel expenses reimbursed at 35p per mile.
Main Duties:
1. To research and prepare educational material for booked groups of
all ages.
2. To receive those groups and provide on-site teaching ( talks,
artefact handling, guided tours, practical workshops)
3. To provide off-site teaching when requested.
4. To assist in planning and organising the annual Education Services
Programme and developing new initiatives.
5. To assist in preparation of publicity material to market and promote
the various educational services.
6. To administer the education bookings for visiting groups and
off-site visits.
7. To care for the handling collections used in the educational work.
To liaise with the Museums Officers in using artefacts from the
collections where appropriate in teaching programmes.
8. To pursue grant applications / sponsorship to assist in funding the
education services programme of events where appropriate.
9. To work within defined budgets both with respect to the use of
other
educational staff both voluntary and paid and to the use of educational
equipment and materials.
10. To attend occasional committee meetings (evenings) as required.
