SYMPOSIUM
on
*Educational Needs of Afghan and Iraqi Refugees in Iran*
organised by
The International Consortium for Refugees in Iran (ICRI)
with the cooperation of
The Bureau for Alien and Foreign Immigrant Affairs (BAFIA) of the
Islamic Republic of Iran*s Ministry of Interior
April 17-22, 1999
Tehran, Iran
This event aims to:
* Bring together NGOs working in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan and Iraq.
* Inform the international community of the specific unmet needs of Afghan and Iraqi refugees in Iran particularly in the field of education (including women*s literacy, health education, skills t
aining, and the special needs of working children).
* Introduce those international NGOs interested in working in Iran to the refugee
situation in Iran
* Improve quality of services provided by NGOs to refugees in Iran by sharing experiences with other NGOs involved in similar situations.
The programme includes:
* Introductory day of briefings by senior Iranian government officials and UNHCR on the refugee situation in Iran
* 3 days of field visits to either Iraqi or Afghan refugee communities and NGO projects in border provinces, including one day in south Teheran
* 2 day workshop bringing together local and international NGOs, UN agencies and donors for exchange of experiences and drawing up plans for future assistance to the communities visited
The workshop will provide a unique forum for the exchange of ideas and the development of practical models and approaches to the understanding and assistance of refugees in Iran. Before the workshop
field visits will be arranged to refugee communities in Khorassan, Khuzestan and Teheran provinces with the aim of giving participants an overview of the refugee situation and some of the programme
being implemented by locally-based NGOs.
The symposium will appeal to NGOs and donors interested in working with Afghan and Iraqi refugees in the field of education in its broadest sense.
The key themes of this workshop are:
* girls* education
* women*s literacy
* teacher training
* pre-school and child care facilities for working women
* working children
* health education for men and women
