Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at an outstanding
research university. Requires a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and

Workshop on Robust Methods for Speech Recognition in Adverse Conditions
May 25-26, 1999, Tampere, Finland

A workshop on Robust Methods for Speech Recognition in Adverse
Conditions, organized in cooperation with COST249 (European
Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research),
the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and Nokia Research Center,
will be held May 25-26, 1999, in Tampere, Finland. The objective
of this two-day workshop is to bring together researchers both
from universities and industrial research groups, and hopefully
to establish future cooperation between the participants and
their groups. Different feature extraction, noise
removal/compensation, and acoustic model adaptation methods
which could be used to bridge the performance gap between
laboratory and real-world ASR systems will be discussed. The
technical program consists of both invited presentations given
by leading experts in the field as well as contributed papers.
The workshop will have an emphasis on the following topics:
- Extraction of noise robust features
- Noise removal pre-processing techniques
- Noise removal/compensation in the feature extraction and
recognition unit
- Model adaptation techniques
- Noise immune auditory features
- Noise removal with microphone arrays
- Speech/non-speech separation for speech recognition applications -
Feature extraction techniques for non-stationary noise environments
Prospective authors are invited to submit papers describing
original work in any of the areas relevant to the workshop. The
Scientific Committee of the workshop will select papers for
presentation. A copy of each paper will be published in the
workshop proceedings. A paper proposal submission implies a
commitment to present a paper if accepted.
The workshop will host a special session focusing on advanced
feature extraction solutions which could be candidates for a
Distributed Speech Recognition (DSR) standard. This session is
associated with an on-going standardization activity within
ETSI which aims at finding and standardizing a feature extraction
algorithm for noise robust speech recognition. The special session
will provide a forum for prospective authors to present their feature
extraction solutions for the DSR standard and compare results with
other possible candidates. Novel feature extraction proposals should
significantly exceed the recognition performance of mel cepstral
features in adverse conditions without sacrificing performance in
noise free conditions. The specific requirements for the papers in
this special session are described in the separate Call for Proposals
that is available on the workshop Web site

submitted to this special session should follow the same paper
guidelines and deadlines set for the normal papers.

equations, and references. The author's kit is available on the

The SPECOM'99 International Workshop will be organized by Moscow
Linguistic University in Moscow on 4-7 October 1999 (as oriented) in
cooperation with St.-Petersburg Institute for Informatics and

The role of perceptual phenomena as a source of explanation for
cross-linguistic sound patterns has, in recent years, become an
increasingly active area of research in phonological theory (see,
e.g., Cote 1997, Flemming 1995, Hume 1998, Jun 1995, Ohala 1992,
Steriade 1995a,b, 1997, Wright 1996). This is in some ways a return
to the acoustic/perceptual emphasis of Jakobson, Fant, and Halle
(1952), though informed by four decades of research on speech
perception. For example, Flemming (1995) proposes to characterize
phonology in terms of articulatory as well as auditory feature sets,
with separate sets of constraints defined over these features. And in
Steriade (1997), perceptually grounded phonological constraints are
exploited as a means of accounting for cross-linguistic patterns of
laryngeal neutralization. To the extent that a perception-based
account of sound patterns is viable, we have increased support for the
integration of acoustic/auditory properties of speech with abstract
phonological structure.
This meeting will focus on perceptual phenomena as they relate to
phonological theory. Topics envisioned include (1) auditory
properties and the featural representation of speech sounds, (2)
perceptual processes and their formal characterization, (3) the place
of perceptual considerations in phonological theory in general.
