i am a writer and curator in the arts here in nyc...
many artists today are recognizing the possiblity of 'co-opting' the language and
methodology of various industrys, in order to produce a new and compelling
product...
is this oppositional...i don't know.
is it implicit that one become absorbed in such a system?
of course the concern becomes a basic tenet of intellectual revolution...how does
one overtake the oppressor without becoming one?
somehow, perhaps naively, many artists and myself believe that this is
possible...something sort of beyond the post-modern project...realizing that a
mass-market mentality is not an enemy and can be a very affable playmate...taking
hold of ones own entitlement to communication networks, large and small.
perhaps this is all blather...afterall, artists today are increasingly more
interested in their own journey as an artist than the art product itself...the
latter, they assume possesses as integrity to the former. --'through the particular
one assumes the universal ' or 'i am the same as the other because i am other than'
my own vision is that the narrative can represent intensely both high and low,
simultaneously.
best...arfus greenwood
postscript...i so enjoyed helen's tale of the midday demon...
