USING THE LS FOR INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH

Tuesday 9th November 1999
The ONS Longitudinal Study (LS) contains linked census data and details of
births, cancers and deaths for 1 per cent of the population of England and
Wales. The study has been used extensively for a diverse range of research
projects since its inception in the early 1970s. Further details appear on
the LS web site (http://www.cls.ioe.ac.uk/Ls/lshomepage.html).
The theme chosen for this year's LS User Group meeting is
"Using the LS for International Research". The meeting is open to all -
including past, present and future LS users. It will include four
presentations of recent on ongoing work in which the study has been used
to make international comparisons. Confirmed speakers include:
Gabriele Doblhammer, Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research,
Rostock, Germany "The relationship between fertility and longevity in
England and Wales and Austria"
Anton Kunst, Department of Public Health, Erasmus University, Rotterdam,
Netherlands "Using the LS for monitoring health inequalities in the EU"
Ray Hall, Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of london
"Households and migration in England and Wales and France"
Michael Randall, Population Research Institute, Penn State University, USA
"Possible uses of the LS and the Echantillon Demographique Permanente for
fertility reasearch"
