EARTH SYSTEMS science day
7 September 1999, The Royal Society, London
Guest of honour from BBC's 'Earth Story'
Professor Aubrey Manning
>From its core to the outer atmosphere, the Earth is an integrated and complex system.
Whilst drawing on physics, chemistry, the material sciences, and biology, the Earth
Sciences are a multidisciplinary enterprise that provide unique intellectual excitement and
an unrivalled scientific training. Whether it be in the realms of seismology, volcanic
eruptions or evolutionary diversification, the earth scientist will integrate data and
methodologies from a wide range of disciplines. Realization that processes operating
within the core and deep mantle influence the entire planet, combined with the unravelling
of the many complex cycles that bind the Earth as a functioning whole, together provide a
new dynamic to the subject. In addition, the Earth Sciences continue to attract wide public
interest, as was evident from the highly successful BBC series Earth Story, two recent
series of Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, and a number of best sellers in the field of
popular science.
The Earth Systems Science Day is a one day meeting where some of the best speakers
working on the most fast-moving areas within the geosciences will present a series of
up-to-date and authoritative overviews. There is no charge for admission, and at the close
of the meeting there will be a reception to allow more informal discussions.
To register your interest, or for further information, please e-mail Dr Chris Franklin
([log in to unmask]) by Friday 20 August.
This event is sponsored by the Natural Environment Research Council, and publicly marks
its commitment to the best in Earth Sciences.
