Announcing A Forthcoming One-Day Conference On:
EXAMINING PRACTICE AND ISSUES IN ENVIRONMENTAL DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES:
WHY HAVE THIS CONFERENCE?
There is a growing debate in environmental policy circles suggesting a need to move from
statistical methods of assessment towards discussion-based or 'deliberative' ways of getting to
decisions and planning policies. The new agenda, in turn, demands the inclusion of many
different social groups; in particular, those who were previously ignored or 'spoken for'. This
conference presents the experience of academics and practitioners in undertaking these new
methodologies and evaluating the outcomes of these processes.
WHAT WILL THE CONFERENCE ADDRESS? This conference will look at how deliberative and
inclusionary processes have been carried out in a variety of settings. The intention is to look at
experience in the East Anglia region, as well as bringing in other relevant perspectives, such as
that working in developing countries. The aim is to provide examples of actual initiatives,
hi-lighting the issues, problems and outcomes, as the basis of discussion in workshops.
WHO WILL BE THERE? Professor Tim O'Riordan, CSERGE, UEA Professor Jacquie Burgess,
ESRU, UCL Dr. Bronislaw Szerszynski, CSEC, Lancaster University Dr. Kate Brown, UEA. Jeff
Bishop, BDOR Ltd
WHEN AND WHERE? 12th July 1999 10:00 until 16:30 The Council Chamber, University of East
Anglia, Norwich, NR4 7TJ.
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND? This one-day conference is the second in a series of four. This series
forms a unique collaboration between academic researchers at University College London,
Lancaster University and the University of East Anglia; and public, voluntary and private sector
partners. The initiative will help define the importance of deliberative and inclusionary
processes for environmental policy, especially in meeting the challenges of the sustainability
agenda.
