Sustainable Cities Network
I am pleased to report that the Sustainable Cities Network, which was funded by ESRC and
EPSRC from September 1995 to March 1998 has now received additional funding for the period 1
May 1999 to December 2000 from the ESRC Global Environmental Change Programme's
Networking and Dissemination fund. The SCN will organise two important meetings in this
period. As yet, details are provisional but these will be confirmed in the near future. The first
meeting will be held in London in autumn 1999 - this will be a one day meeting to present the
results of ESRC and EPSRC-funded Sustainable Cities research and which also has commentary
on these from user group discussants. A key issue for the second phase of the SCN will be
dissemination.
The second meeting will be a longer 2-3 day conference which brings together ESRC-funded
research with research on sustainable cities funded by EPSRC (Sustainable Cities Programme)
and NERC (URGENT Programme). This meeting may be held at the Earth Centre, near Doncaster,
but no final arrangements for the venue have yet been made.
The new phase of the SCN will develop a link between the Network and the journal Local
Environment and to build upon the latter's association with the International Council for Local
Environmental Initiatives. (ICLEI). This will enable more effective networking and dissemination
and develop an international perspective. The intention is to work closely with Local
Environment and ICLEI to develop the SCN beyond the ESRC funding period in the form of an
annual international conference.
The SCN is always open to adding new participants to its mailing list (preferably by email). If you
have any colleagues who would like to be involved with the SCN please ask them to contact
either David Gibbs ([log in to unmask]) or Cally Barker ([log in to unmask]).
