DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
UNIVERSITY OF HULL
TWO COLLABORATIVE ESRC STUDENTSHIPS AVAILABLE
The Department of Geography (RAE 4A) seeks well-qualified candidates to apply for the following
two fully-funded ESRC case studentships:
Environmental Issues and Food Sector SMEs in Yorkshire and the Humber
The project is a collaboration between the University of Hull (Professor David Gibbs and Dr. Sally
Eden) and the Environment Agency (Dr. Tony Edwards, Ridings Area Manager). The project aims
to: establish the level of understanding of, and compliance with, environmental regulation
amongst food sector SMEs; evaluate the drivers of environmental performance; analyse the
intercompany relationships underlying environmental awareness and performance, through
examining the processes of organisational learning and supply-chain influence prevalent in this
sector and region.
Globalisation, Competitiveness and Business Response: Experiences in the Humberside
sub-region.
This studentship is a collaboration between the University of Hull (Professor David Gibbs and Dr.
Andy Jonas) and Humberside Training and Enterprise Council. The studentship will investigate
how Humberside's unique attributes shape the globalisation process locally and the types of
competitive strategies pursued by firms. These competitive strategies will be evaluated through
in-depth analysis of a sample of locally-based and non-locally based firms in the food and
chemicals sectors
Studentship and Application Details
Applicants should have a good first degree or Masters degree in a relevant discipline. Both
studentships involve time working with the non-academic collaborating partners - for the
Environment Agency, this will be in Hull and Leeds, for Humberside TEC in Hull - this will enable
access to databases and library facilities. In addition to the standard ESRC annuial award of
6,455 pounds sterling, each studentship will receive an additional 1,350 pounds sterling per
annum.
