Special Review of European Union Environmental Policy
In November last year, a milestone was reached in the development of EU environmental policy.
Twenty five years after the adoption of the First Environmental Action Programme, environmental
policy is recognised as one of the most successful aspects of European political integration. A
special edition of the journal Government and Policy (Environment and Planning C) issued this
month, reflects upon the development of the environmental acquis and offers some predictions
for the future of this important and fast moving sector of EU activity. Edited by Dr. Andrew Jordan
from CSERGE, the issue (Volume 17, No. 1, pp. 1-126) draws together distinguished
commentators from both sides of the Atlantic, including Profs. Albert Weale and Alberta Sbragia.
Individual papers in the collection discuss the development and implementation of EU policy,
review the greening of non environmental sectors such as agriculture, and discuss the EU s
growing stature as an international environmental actor on the world stage. Nigel Haigh, former
Director of the IEEP, rounds off the collection with an essay drawing upon his considerable
experience of EU environmental policy making.
