Greetings from New York! Sam here.
Quentin Merritt recently passed the admistrative torch. I will now
be your enviroethics second list owner. David Pearson (our ongoing owner)
is showing me the ropes, so I can fill in when needed and give him an
occassional rest, keep us in motion.
As is customary, a brief word on my background, education, research
directions and general interests.
I'll shortly post this in the Biography file, as listed on the
enviroethics homepage. I encourage you all to do the same. You can send a
brief bio to David and I at: [log in to unmask]
Samuel Weinstock
MA Candidate, Environmental Conservation Education,
New York University
***
In 1993, I received a BA in educational philosophy and anthropology from
the School of Social Science, Hampshire College (Amherst, Massachusetts,
USA). I spent a year performing field research in Australia, working
within rural and urban independent Aboriginal centers of learning. This
(rather unexpectedly) led me to develop and coordinate a telecommunication
project between an Aboriginal college and an alternative secondary school
in upstate New York, in 1992.
Interests in pedagogy and developing projects across cultural lines
persist, but are more focused now on how our very approaches to knowledge
informs our ecological lenses and shapes our world views.
Since 1996, I have been a Master's candidate in the Environmental
Conservation Education Program, part of the Philosophy of Education
department, School of Education, at New York University.
My forthcoming thesis (again, to Australia) will be on "Linga Longa
Aboriginal Philosophy Farm (Rollands Plains, New South Wales): an
Aboriginal-run experiment in social, spiritual and environmental education
and change. Here I am looking at the possible ways Aboriginal Philosophy
Farm generates a powerful (refreshing and unforeseen) critique on western
schools of ecology.
Other interests range in poetry, experiential and media education,
environmental justice and postmodernism.
My background in new communications technology is reasonable and hopes to
further improve.
