Derek,
A summary of shear strength data from the literature together with
direct shear testing of some UK domestic waste is given in:
Jones, DRV, Taylor, DP & Dixon, N (1997)
Shear strength of waste and its use in landfill stability analysis,
Geoenvironmental Engineering, Thomas Telford, London, pp. 343-350.
From this work, I tend to use c'=5 kPa and phi'=25 deg as being fairly
conservative estimates for slope stability analysis. However, waste
strength will obviously vary greatly with its composition and as it
degrades with time.
Cheers,
Russell

A request for information!
Can anyone suggest typical effective stress parameters applicable for
household waste, or where these may be obtained? Any pointers would be
helpful.
Many thanks.
