What are list members currently using for split barrel sample containers?
We have been using one litre glass jars with two part lids for the last
twenty years. These are the same type used for home canning of produce,
etc. None of the components are reused. The seal portion of the lid, once
compressed, is not intended for subsequent use, and the replacement cost of
the jars and lid rings is perceived to be less than the cost of cleaning
them for reuse.
Some of the problems we have encountered with the jars are breakage,
loosening of the lids with temperature change and subsequent loss of soil
moisture, the jars' weight and bulk, and their cost.
We are currently considering use of 3 mil (or >) polyethylene bags, sealed
with steel ties. Some of the problems we anticipate with these are loss of
soil structure, poor sealing, and possible puncturing. The standard we
follow for this type of sampling (ASTM D1586) appears to allude to the use
of jars, without being explicit.
I would appreciate any comments as to your current practice, or past
experiences, with split barrel sample comtaiers.
Thank you.
