Generally peat is not a suitable founding medium and you would need to carry
out ground treatment or transfer the foundation loading through the peat
layer to an adequate bearing stratum.

Subject: questions about peat strength
List Members:
We are looking at the bearing capacity of a large foundation on silt/sand
with layers of peat. As the structure will have significant lateral loads,
we are worried about a failure surface developing through the peat layers.
Most of the reference material I have found deals with compressibility, but
has little to say about strength parameters. Can anyone suggest good
references on this issue, or on foundation design in peat in general?
Thanks very much.
Regards
Eric Parker
