Dear Hafeez,
The friction coefficient between two geomembranes is dependant of the
texture of the membrane, and of course of the installation conditions
(water or soil trapped between membranes).
I guess the GSE is a smooth surfaced HDPE geomembrane, thus, the
friction angle should be low. I have no value for geomembrane /
geomembrane friction, but for geomembrane / geotextile friction, it can
vary between in the range of :
6-17° (woven monofilament geotextile, 6 beeing for HDPE geomembranes)
8-23° (non-woven needle punched, 8 beeing for HDPE geomembranes)
You can find some data regarding the friction angles of geosynthetics in
R. Koerner's book : Designing with geosynthetics, publiched by Prentice
Hall, NJ. In the third edition (1994), these informations are p. 451.
I strongly suggest you to conduct a ASTM D5321 test (friction angle of
geosynthetics / geosynthetics or geosynthetics / soil), not only for
this friction angle value, but for all the interfaces you will find in
your construction. These friction data remain very dependant of the type
of geomembrane you will use, and of course of the type of soil.
Do not hesitate to contact us if you need any particular information.
