In preparing a lecture on Strictured Documents, I noticed that my
material on ODA (Open Document Architecture) seemed pretty dated, and my
impression is that although a number of vendors stated they were
committing to ODA, in effect it is yet another international standard
which is not used.
There was also another "Vendor Neutral" standard for compound documents,
called OpenDoc. I don't know whether it fared any better.
Nor am I 100% clear on the impact that HTML and then XML may have had on
such standards and their uptake - HTML obviously does not have the
resources that a standard like ODA would require. But can ODA exist as
XML DTDs?
I would be interested in both opinions on the implicit issues, and
references to any up to date materials on standards for structured
documents.
