                            Using Videoconferencing

                    GATEWAY FOR DISTANCE TEACHING AND LEARNING

                                  Organised by
                                     JTAP
                                    and the
    United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association (UKERNA)

                                24th February 1999

                         Royal Geographical Society, London
                     (with The Institute of British Geographers)

                        http://ctiweb.cf.ac.uk/jtap/useVC.html

Tertiary education faces the challenge of providing increased educational
opportunities within restricted resources. Many educational institutions are
responding to this demand with the development of distance education
programmes. Video technologies have enormous potential in the support of
distance learning and integrated with other media communications may support
a diverse range of teaching methods. Videoconferencing is one application
that is being used for a variety of purposes facilitating formal instruction,
connection with guest speakers and experts, international and
inter-institutional collaboration in the development and delivery of courses
and improved links with industry and commerce. With the advent of lifelong
learning, such technologies can bridge the instructional gap, embracing new
communities of learners disadvantaged by limited time, distance or
physical disability and update the knowledge base of employees at their place
of work. Many academic staff now need to know how video applications may work
effectively for them and seek advice on exploiting such media in support of
the delivery of distance teaching and learning programmes in further and
higher education.

Aims of the Event
=================

This event is intended to provide information for those who would like to
learn about the use of video applications for flexible and distance
learning. Illustrated by actual user experiences, this one day event will
explore the potential of video technologies and materials for
distance delivered courses and student support. The use of
videoconferencing for a wide variety of teaching scenarios and learning
activities will be reviewed and the do's and don'ts in service
planning and organisation highlighted. There will be an
opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with those who have been
involved in the development and implementation of flexible learning using
networked video as a teaching and learning tool. An exhibition will also be
held in which a selection of products developed within the academic
community will be available for display and demonstration.

A limited number of exhibitor stands will be made available for anyone
interested in displaying materials appropriate to video applications and
teaching/learning.

Who Should Attend?
===================

The day is aimed at UK educational and research bodies. It would
be of interest to further and higher education teaching staff,
administrators, technical and research staff who are interested in
using videoconferencing for teaching and learning and also to those who
have been charged with implementing video applications and materials
within their institution.

Venue
=====

The event will take place at the Royal Geographical Society (with
The Institute of British Geographers), London.
