Dear list members
I have been asked to develop material which helps workshop participants to
think through the ethical issues in using evidence.
I am concentrating on decision-making (of whatever type) and considering
examples of good and bad practice.
There see to be some obvious categories:
1. Using evidence as an inappropriate excuse to ration e.g. some cancer
treatments?
2. Confusing lack of evidence with evidence of harm e.g. school health
services being reduced in UK
3. Ignoring evidence e.g. growing number of Caesarian Sections in childbirth
4. Making decisions based on lack of epidemiological knowledge e.g. only
looking for RCTs on health promotion topics, finding none and then saying
the approach does not work.
Are there more categories? Have you any case studies you would like to
share with the list? I will post up any replies I receive to the list.
P.S.
Peter
