Creating Caring Communities to Serve Mentally Ill Offenders

International Forensic Mental Health Conference
University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK
19 - 23 July 1999

Organised by the Faculty of Health, University of Central Lancashire,
Preston, UK and Ehrenkranz School of Social Work, New York University,
USA

Mentally Ill or Mentally Disordered Offenders present the practitioners,
policy makers and family members with a number of dilemmas and
challenges.

In managing this care, service providers within Mental Health Care,
Social Care and the Criminal Justice System have to maintain a balance
between the needs of the individual patient, professional role and
responsibility and the expectations of society.

The issues raised by this client group transcend service boundaries and
are common to many countries.  This International Forensic Mental Health
Conference provides an opportunity for practitioners, policy makers and
researchers to share ideas and to discuss common issues affecting
Mentally Ill Offenders.

The key areas for the conference will include:

· Violence in Mentally Ill populations
· Training strategies
· The Media and its impact
· Promoting advocacy to improve policy and services
· Victims of Mentally Ill offenders

Conference Aims

This conference provides an opportunity for individuals from a range of
organisations and agencies to meet together with the aim of

· creating an organisation/association where practitioners, policy
makers, researchers and advocates from multiple countries could find
ongoing opportunities for learning and collaboration.

· exchanging information on effective models of care, intervention
strategies, research, training and policy making to be readily utilised
in different countries to improve care on a local, regional and national
basis.

Call for Papers /Workshops

Proposals for Papers / Workshops are invited from any discipline or
perspective relevant to the management or care of mentally ill or
mentally disordered offenders.  Proposals by practitioners, service
users, decision and policy makers, as well as by academics, students,
researchers and advocates are welcomed.

The organisers will consider papers relating to the following topics:

· models of care for effective interventions (Clinical Interventions)
· research strategies and results
· developing new policies
· training
· financing and organisation issues
· the media issue -The mad and the bad-

Abstract Guidelines

It is important that your abstract be submitted as follows:

Double spaced, titled clearly and limited to a maximum of  250 words.

On a separate page list:
· author+s name and work address
· telephone number at work, fax and email address
· job title
· title of abstract submitted
· indicate if you wish to propose a workshop

Do not type your name on the abstract page

Disordered Offenders will be organised for participants on Thursday 22
and Friday 23 July 1999.
