ESRC CASE STUDENTSHIP IN QUANTITATIVE CRIMINOLOGY
DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCE AND CENTRE FOR APPLIED STATISTICS
LANCASTER UNIVERSITY
This project will examine technical, methodological and substantive issues
relating to the use and analysis of the Offenders Index, a large database of
criminal conviction data. The studentship is in collaboration with the Home
Office, and is jointly supervised by Brian Francis (Applied Statistics) and
Keith Soothill (Applied Social Science). It is suitable either for a
statistician wishing to learn more about criminology, or a criminologist
wishing to develop quantitative skills.
The Offenders Index includes all serious convictions from 1963 until
the end of 1996 with a cumulative total of over six million records. Owing to
the hierarchical nature of the material it is a difficult dataset to handle.
Beyond the technical difficulties, there are limitations of the dataset which
need to be faced. So, for instance, there is currently no information of time
spent in custody, which is crucial for most kinds of criminological follow-up.
This CASE Studentship has an extra grant contribution of 1400
pounds which is over and above the basic postgraduate ESRC award.
