Dear Jennifer and all out there in ListServ Land:
In the United States, the Internet is becoming the preferred method
for patient education. Currently, 60% of Internet users seek health
information with 77% wanting it from their own health care
professional (ref: Cyber Dialogue study 1998).
Unfortunately, many and perhaps most, health Internet sites are
promotional rather than educational. In April, the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services issued a warning that health
information on the Internet can be biased, misleading or outright
wrong.
A few companies (ours included if I may say) have either developed or
licensed objective content to address this problem. Some
progressive universities, hospitals, and private physicians have
already instituted such web sites.
Yours truly,
Mike Myers, M.D.
