Debate on Online Drugstores Moves to
Capitol
By JERI CLAUSING
WASHINGTON -- Tom the cat was able to buy the
anti-impotence drug Viagra over the Internet, even
though he admitted he was a feline whose only sexual problem was the
fact that he had been neutered. And a 7-year-old Pennsylvania girl
purchased prescription diet pills online, a drug that had not yet been
approved for sale in this country.
Although such cases have received increased
news coverage and even though a House
committee has forwarded a list of more than
100 suspect Web sites to federal agencies,
officials from the Food and Drug Administration
and the Justice Department during a hearing on
Friday were able to provide few answers about
what they were doing to combat the dangerous
trend.
Officials of the Federal Trade Commission, who
also spoke at the hearing, proposed a new
federal law that would require all online
pharmacies to post information about where
they were located, where they were licensed
and who their doctors and drug suppliers are.
But officials with the FDA and the Justice Department stuck to
the Clinton Administration's standard line that e-commerce
should
not be burdened by new regulations.
