Dr. Edwin Rothman, 66, an osteopathic physician from
Haverford, Pa., recently bought his first computer, a
400-megahertz mail-order machine. His immediate goals? To use
the Internet to pursue his rare-book collecting, to get
up-to-the-minute information on his investments and to send
e-mail to his four grandchildren. Dr. Rothman, while no
stranger to
gadgets, has never used an A.T.M., has never turned on the
cellular phone that came with his car and always bypasses an
automated
phone answering system in favor of a live voice. Here are
excerpts from a diary of his foray into the computer world.
