On National Public Radio's Morning Edition on Friday, there was a story
about how Congress is writing a bill for medical record privacy.
Apparently,
they are strugling with the right of patient's prviacy with the need to
use
the medical record information for public health (e.g., research and
what if
the patient is like Typhoid Mary?) It was a pretty interesting story.
The example they gave for how open records can help patients was a kid
with
asthma. He had a program that he entered his symptoms and other
information
(I think peak flows). He was able to use this program to adjust his
medication so that he was able to do the things that he wanted to do
(like
go to his freind's house where that ahd a allergenic dog) when using the
program. The program advised him about when he was about to get into
trouble. His doctor (this is the medical record privacy part) was able
to
look at what had been happened every day and take whatever action was
necessary. Pretty cool. I could see a program like this for diabetes and
cystic fibrosis.
