Impossible to say without more information. What compiler and machine and
OS are you using? What READ and FORMAT and variable declarations are
you using.
>From the message it sounds like you're trying to read with a list directed
format (a *) and the data isn't comma or blank delimited. Or maybe trying to
read an unformatted file with a format statement.
Try reading a line into a character variable and then printing it out to
make sure it looks like what you expect.
Something like
character(len=80) :: line
read(unit,fmt='(80a1)') line
print *, line
