Dear UK scholars,
Another unsolicited message from the antipodes (chasing
Geoff's) I have been a NOZ eves-dropper on the recent British
exchange over whether to attend the Sydney event or not. As an
antipodean I detected an interesting whiff of metropolitan versus
peripheral disinterest rising off the discussion about the Sydney
Conference on Research. I suppose we antipodeans are used to
travelling long distances to get ANYWHERE but in a global world of
scholarship maybe we all have to do a bit more travelling? Or stick
to cyberspace?? And yes, academics everywhere now face the same
difficulties of funding travel to such events.
The ABA has done important work in coordinating the news of
research in our area. I find their research invaluable.
I certainly support the idea of a strand for media education.
Reconsider and come! An upsidedown view of the world now and then can
be exhilarating.
Ruth Zanker
Best wishes
