Some of you may be aware that the Australian Broadcasting Authority is
organising an International Forum of Youth and Media Research, which will be
held at the Millennium Hotel in Sydney and will run from 27 November to 1
December 2000. This event will be the second meeting of international
researchers on young people and the media, the first being held in Paris in
April 1997.

A call from papers went out a few months ago, but response from the UK has
been pretty minimal, so I'm trying to generate some interest. I'm actually
due to be attending a meeting of the committee this weekend, and it would
be good if I could have at least a couple of indications of likely
contributions!

The themes and issues for the Forum are as follows:

·	Globalisation and socialisation- looking at issues such as culture
as an
important determinant of children's personalities, cultural identity and
citizenship, the threat of globalisation, global versus local, and the impact
of new technologies on children.

·	Policy and regulation of media for young people - looking at how
policies and regulations have addressed the globalisation issues, also
exploring commercial vs public media issues

·	Approaches to research methodologies - focusing on new approaches to
research, new tools, diversity of research methods

·	Youth production and consumption of media - young people as
producers and users of media, also exploring issues such as children's
relationship with
commercial media.

Cross-cultural research, comparative studies and discussion of gender issues
can be accommodated under the relevant theme depending on the focus of the
paper.

Proposals will need to be submitted to the ABA by 12 November either by
email at
[log in to unmask] or by post on a disc to Year 2000 Forum, ABA, PO Box
Q500, Queen Victoria Building, New South Wales 1230 Australia - but if you
think you might be interested and could offer me a brief summary of what
you'd hope to do, please e-mail me immediately: [log in to unmask]

Cheers
