Subject: For moderation - Rsearch into Practice conference at UH
I would be grateful if you would circulate the following announcement:
SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
RESEARCH INTO PRACTICE
CONFERENCE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE
7 JULY 2000
Since the issue of the first call for papers there has been widespread
interest in the theme of this conference. We are therefore compiling an
international team of referees to select the abstracts and will be raising
the focus from a national to an international level.
Abstracts of papers are now invited. The deadline for reciept of abstracts
is 1 February 2000.
For further information please visit the conference website:
http://www.herts.ac.uk/artdes/conex/res2prac/
The central theme of the conference is to examine the foundations of
practice-based research in art and design. Models of research through
practice may be found in the professional development of the subject
through exhibited and award-winning artefacts, in accrued historical
evidence in collections, in academic studies and their assessment in the
RAE, etc. We are particularly interested in how any of these models can be
mapped onto research degree regulations to provide paradigms of research
through practice for students and their supervisors.
The aim will be to generate papers that critically address these issues and
contribute to the key literature for the next few years. Conference papers
will be grouped into related themes. To facilitate the dissemination of the
outcomes, selected papers will be published in the electronic web-based
journal Working Papers in Art and Design (ISSN 1466-4917) and will be made
available on the internet long-term.
Issues that need to be addressed include:
What is the relationship of research to knowledge and interpretation?
How does practice generate research outcomes?
Is all studio practice a form of research?
What is the function of a text/thesis in a practice-based submission?
Does conventional academic writing exclude a "poetics" of enquiry?
What is the role of serendipity in a "systematic" enquiry?
How might responses to the above questions be compared to whether
Picasso deserves a PhD?
For further information please visit the conference website:
http://www.herts.ac.uk/artdes/conex/res2prac/
Early registration is recommended. If you have any questions please contact
