HAIL LEARNED COMMUNITY OF DIX-HUITIEMISTES!
SCSECS President Kevin Cope here, announcing the latest enhancements
to the greatest convention of the pre-millennium era, SCSECS Y2K,
March 9-12, 2000, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (visit our exciting
web site at http://www.libarts.ucok.edu/english/SCSECS/). I'm
pleased to announce that, to honor our untimely deceased former
Treasurer, Laura Crouch, the SCSECS Executive Board has created,
especially for SCSECS Y2K, the Laura Crouch Junior Plenary Lecture,
to be offered by a dynamic and promising younger scholar working in
the area of early modern science. I am doubly pleased to announce
that this memorial lecture will be given by one of our specialty's
most scintillating younger scholars, Anna Battigelli, of the
SUNY-Plattsburhg English Department. Anna, whose groundbreaking
new book on Lady Margaret Cavendish has quickly moved from mere
but nevertheless extraordinary groundbreaking status to perennial
classic, will be lecturing on early science and the problem of the
self. This promises to be an interdisciplinary extravaganza that
willset new standards from specialties across the academic and
ideological spectrum!
Additionally, I'm delighted to announce that Plenary Speaker
George Rousseau has inked an agreement to supplement his lecture
with a dazzling concert. Scholar-Maestro Rousseau's post-lecture
performance--another wonder of cross-disciplinary aptitude--will
render pieces by MOzart and possibly also Hayden from the specially
designed dining, lecturing, and musicalizing hall atop the
spectacular Bank One Tower overlooking the Mighty MIssisippi River
in downtown Baton Rouge, near the landing site of that famous
baroque explorer, the Sieur de Bienville.
And don't forget the infinite array of social activities,
including a visit with the alligators!
There's still time--only a few more days--to submit paper
proposals! Visit the web site for a list of seminars or writ
e
directly to me for placement of your paper ([log in to unmask]).
See you in Baton Rouge!
Cheers, Kevin L. Cope, SCSECS President
