Hi Lisa.
Gabe here. Well, my guess would be there are always 2 really dumb but
effective ways to start an occasional poem like this. By dumb I mean
simple. First, check out the poems in the tradition of the occasion. In
this case, epithalamions, or epithaliamiums, or epithalamia. Not to be
confused with epithelia, which, I think, is skin.
Anyway, looking at the tradition can give you a good idea of how others
have tackled this topic. THe benefits of beginning this way are two: (1)
You get to postpone writing; (2) When looking at the array of examples,
you come to understand that, generally, the possible ways to begin are
limitless. And when you (1) feel no pressure to write, and (2) feel that
anything that comes to mind is going to be adequate, usually you can
begin writing with that freedom of heart and looseness of mind that will
engender a good (ie, entertaining) poem.
THe second way is just to start by writing whatever nonsense comes to
mind and deal with it later. All writing, I think, begins as an act of
nonsense.
Anyway, that's my two bits. Take care and good luck.
